NSW: Man charged after yesterday s fatal smash at Dee Why
SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - A 27-year-old truck driver has been charged over yesterday's
10-vehicle pile-up on Sydney's northern beaches in which a baby boy was killed.
Crash investigators last night charged the truck driver, from Punchbowl in Sydney's
west, with negligent driving causing death following the fiery smash at the Pittwater
Road and Warringah Road intersection at Dee Why about 8:30am (AEST).
He was bailed to appear at Manly Local Court on May 4.
Three of the cars involved burst into flames with baby Scott suffering burns to 90
per cent of his body.
The 11-month old child died in hospital after being plucked by police officer Don McKinnon,
a former rugby league international, from his melting safety capsule in the back of his
mother's car.
The child's 33-year-old mother suffered burns to 20 per cent of her body and his three-year-old
brother sustained scalp burns.
Both were admitted to Royal North Shore Hospital.
Their family car caught fire after a dump truck fully laden with sand apparently lost
control as it descended the steep incline of Warringah Road, crashing into a line of cars
at traffic lights.
A fourth person was taken to Manly Hospital with minor facial injuries.
