NSW: Two women reportedly die after being given wrong blood

Two women have reportedly died in separate incidents after allegedly being given the
wrong blood type while being treated at two Sydney hospitals.

New South Wales Health Minister CRAIG KNOWLES says both deaths are being investigated
by the Coroner who is expected to hand down his findings next month.

According to Channel Nine, the women died in April and May last year after receiving
blood transfusions at St Vincents private, and St George public hospitals.

One of the patients, a 69-year-old woman, was admitted to St George hospital after
a car accident.

The second woman, aged in her 80s, was undergoing a hip replacement in St Vincents.

Mr KNOWLES says the incidents occurred despite rigorous procedures that had been introduced
to protect patients from the AIDS virus.

He says blood management regulations in Australia are among the toughest in the world.
